Teeth cleaning also know as prophylaxis, is a preventive treatment of a gum disease.
Once every six months we need to remove the tartar and plaque that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in the areas that are difficult to reach in routine tooth brushing.
It is often done by a hygienist. Most dental hygienists will recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months in order to maintain good oral health.
More frequent cleaning is recommended for people that have extensive dental work done in the past, mothers to be, and people with periodontal disorders.
Routine examination is recommended every six months as well.
This may include yearly dental x-rays.
Good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities, tartar build up and gum disease.
At our office we recommend getting fluoride treatment at every hygiene visit as well.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque, bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
It also reverses early decay and helps speed mineralization as well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and adults.
